Today's Discovery

As I was writing today, I learned that Haeddry has never ridden a horse. He doesn't remotely know how to ride. If it weren't such an annoying skill to lack, Nyd would be glad for the reason to less of HD. However, Nyd is going to have to lead Haeddry's horse around by the reins until HD learns how to properly ride.

“How do I turn him around?” Haeddry called over his shoulder.
“Just keep pulling on the reins to the right and he’ll eventually turn around.” Nyd rolled his eyes when Haeddry, after finally getting the stallion to turn, kept turning so that they went in a wide circle.

Update on my main characters: They are getting along terribly. They keep saying and doing things to each other for the sole purpose of getting on the other's nerves. Hopefully by August they'll be good friends. I think that will be my new goal. Make Haeddry and Nyd friends.

Meet the Cast: Cheese

And now for a very special character who is close to my heart: the rat named Cheese.

When Haeddry reaches a town called Eston, he runs into a boy named Yelfie. The boy, misisng teeth and grimy from acting like a hooligan all day, invited H.D. to the inn that his brother and uncle work at. His uncle in fact runs the inn, aptly named The Burly Fish.

Yelfie is also the proud owner of Cheese. He found the narcoleptic rat by the Troyus River and they are constant companions. Cheese enjoys sleeping and eating cheese. As Yelfie will assure you, Cheese is not a cannibal. He is in fact a rat.

Haeddry gets into a bind when he tries to entertain Yelfie in return for his help getting him lodgings for the night. Being an illusion mage in training, Haeddry knows the spell that will change the color of Cheese's fur. It's very similar to the spell that Haeddry uses to disguise his hair color. When he thinks no one is looking, H.D. changes Cheese's fur different colors much to the delight of Yelfie. Nyd, however, witnessed the rat's changing colors and confronts Haeddry about it afterwards, forcing the young mage to admit that he is in fact a mage.

Meet the Cast: Nydedrilar

My antihero of sorts is a swordsman named Nydedrilar, commonly known as Nyd. As he explains to Haeddry, "I fought against Rylia five years ago and was responsible for a platoon of twenty men. I’m part of the reason Gilvorna’s prince is still alive today. Since that war, I’ve been serving as a bodyguard for traveling merchants and accompanying nobles on the road." He is from Anetheia, Arnsved's oldest and fiercest enemy. There hasn't been any conflict or really any communication between the two nations in centuries. Nyd doesn't hold anything against Haeddry for being from Arnsved although H.D. panicked a little upon learning where Nyd was from.

Nyd's past is pretty mysterious, even to me, and I created him! His prized possession is his sword. He knew some enchantment adepts at one point in his career. He taught them how to use swords and things like that and in return they pimped his sword out. The blade doesn't break, rust or go dull and there are runes that when activated with give it the power of fire. Pretty excited stuff. I wouldn't want to get in a swordfight with him!

Note: His name is simply pronounced "Nid."

Also, I couldn't help myself. I love Yu-Gi-Oh!

Meet the Cast: Haeddry Dakin

I am doing well as far as my wordcount goes so I can take some time out and introduce my characters. The protagonist's name is Haeddry Dakin and I've written some things about him already. He is in fact nineteen years old and has been slowly learning how to perform spells in the illusion school of magic. His teacher was an illusion adept named Makwyr who has been murdered mysteriously.

Haeddry is on the road in search of a new master. He envies destruction mages and wishes he could become an adept in that school. Unfortunately, he only has the capacity for illusion magic and therefore cannot learn destruction.

He is wiry, fit, and dresses plainly. Since he does so much traveling, his clothes are often dirty and his boots are more dirt than leather. He was born with brown hair but when his powers manifested themselves, his hair turned white. In order to hide his nature and to disguise the white hair that he so abhors, he has used a semi-permanent disguise spell on his hair to return it to the shade that he grew up with. His eyes are also brown.

Being a mage, he hates the rain as well as snow. He cannot bear to be on or near large bodies of water and he has a severe dislike of fish. He enjoys playing harmless tricks on people and spending time by a roaring fireplace.

Edit: As a note, the name is pronounced "Hay-dree Dah-kin." I know the first name is spelt a little fancy. I may abbreviate his name as H.D. in the future.
